William
John Clifton Haley was born in Highland Park a suburb of
Detroit on July 6th 1925, to a Kentuckian father and mother
who originated from England (wow Bill Haley a token Brit!).
Growing up in Chester, Pennsylvania, Bill started recording
in 1946 but it wasn’t until he formed the band ‘The
Saddlemen’ in 1951 that things started to change. An
historic moment in Rock’ n ’Roll history was when
he recorded Jackie Brenston’s “Rocket 88”
for Holiday Records. This was the first true Rock ‘n’
Roll record by a white artist.
The
central event in Haley's career was the single "Rock
Around the Clock" topping the charts for eight weeks
in the spring and summer of 1955, an event that most music
historians identify as the dawn of the rock & roll era.
Getting the song there, however, took more than a year,
a period in which the band had already done unique and essential
service in the cause of bringing rock & roll into the
world, with the million-selling single "Shake, Rattle
and Roll" to their credit; equally important, in the
three years before that, Haley and his band had already
broken new ground with the singles of "Rocket 88,"
"Rock the Joint," and "Crazy, Man, Crazy."
Included
on this CD are all the great Haley recordings, first with
‘The Saddlemen’ and then ‘The Comets’
from the early to mid fifties.
Haley
died of a brain tumour a broken man in Harlingen, Texas,
aged just 55 on February 9th, 1981 but he left these wonderful
recordings to remember him by. ‘See you later Bill!’
